2025 marks my 10th year, producing and directing my own theatre performances for young audiences, which makes this production, “Si Penjaga Memori” extra special. I have always wanted to produce a show that talks about the Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia, especially after going through a very confusing phase of my life, growing up with my late grandfather who had Alzheimer’s Disease.

I remembered that there were a lot of speculations on supernatural and superstitious things when my late grandfather mentioned that he spoken to someone who, at that point of time, had already passed on. These speculations made the situations all the more confusing for me and needless to say, our relationship was strained.

When I first became aware of Alzheimer’s Disease, I started connecting the dots and tried to make sense of what happened to my grandfather and it made me wished that someone had openly talked to me about it. Perhaps, things would have been different for me, as a child back then.

So, in 2018, as part of my presentation for my Master in Education (Drama) with the National Institute of Education (NIE), I began to explore ways of presenting theatre for young audiences (TYA) that revolve around Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia. From then on, I ruminated, wondered and dreamed of putting such a performance on stage, with one sole objective—to bring awareness of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia to young audiences, so that their experience can be a little less confusing and hopefully, they’ll be able to maintain a healthy relationship with their grandparents even till the late stages of their lives.

All those years of dreaming finally culminated in this year’s production, Si Penjaga Memori. Do come and watch.
